I am a native of Ledyard and a lifelong resident of our community. My first schooling was at the little one room schoolhouse that used to be located on Gallup Hill Road, at the corner of Spicer Hill Ext and Gallup Hill. First grade- 11 boys , no girls. Second grade- 4 girls moved into the District. Third grade- time to move to the brand new “Consolidated” Ledyard Center School where Juliet Long was both teacher and Principa1! She was tough but a very good teacher! NFA for High School, as we did not have a High School in town.
I had a non-competitive appointment to West Point, but had to wait a year due to having an 1st Alternate position. I chose to attend The Citadel, Military College of South Carolina for the year of waiting. Decided I wanted an education of my choice and not just what the military directed and stayed in Charleston, South Carolina.
I graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration and was commissioned in Finance Corps. Ft Stewart, Georgia was home for 3 years where I had my own office and staff in the summers, handling a $ million payroll for the 2 week training period attended by National Guard and Army Reserve troops.
In 1966 I returned home to start a business and serve in the Army Reserve, commanding an Infantry Company and the 3 Company Reserve Center.
My first elected office was Board of Finance in 1981at age 26. That was when the town was Selectmen/ Board of Finance organized.
I have served on many Boards and Commissions since then without a break in service. The longest service was on Zoning Board of Appeals for 18 years. Library Commission, Economic Development Commission plus civic service in Rotary, Church, Fire Company and Ledyard Fair.
I was convinced to leave behind Zoning Board of Appeals in order to serve on the Town Council. I served 2 terms there, with the second as Chairman. In 2007 the Republicans needed a candidate for Mayor and there was no abundance of volunteers.
In that 2007 period I saw significant challenges for our town and felt that I possessed the skills, experience and commitment needed to take on those challenges. My many years of Commercial Real Estate continues to add to the tools needed to better serve our town. The challenges changed after arriving in office. The economy tanked and the “affordability of living in Ledyard” was even a higher priority than when I was first sworn into office. My highest priorities prior to election were the “Affordability of Living in Ledyard” and seeking areas of mutual interest that would improve relations with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation.
Serving every resident of our community has, and continues to be, my commitment. Preserving a quality of life which you, the residents came here for and want to have continued, is a major focus of my commitment! I am a fiscal conservative, but not an extremist. I believe the residents want so much more than “trash collection and streets plowed.” I believe you expect quality education for those following us, libraries in which to learn, recreation for you and your families in playtime, fire companies to help when you need them, police to provide a safe environment, public works to open streets when we get those “storms”, and an ambulance when you need medical assistance!
I love your Town of Ledyard and “my” town. I seek to continue using my Leadership, Experience, and Commitment to “Keep Ledyard Moving Forward!”
